Kabojja Junior School teacher sentenced to four years in prison for attempted sodomy

KAMPALA, Uganda| Godfrey Muhumuza, a teacher at Kabojja Junior School, has been sentenced to four and a half years in prison for attempting to sodomise his pupil during a field trip.

In a plea agreement, Muhumuza acknowledged sexually assaulting a male student and was given a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence. Muhumuza voluntarily entered a guilty plea to avoid a full trial, and the court imposed the sentence.

Buganda Road Court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi, accepted the plea and delivered the sentence to Muhumuza.

“I… freely and voluntarily plead guilty to the charges… and agree to be sentenced to four years and six months of imprisonment… and declare that, prior to entering this plea bargain, I have had full opportunity to discuss the facts of my case…my constitutional rights, the waiver of those rights, and the consequences of my plea with my advocate.” Muhumuza signed the plea agreement.

Nine aggravating factors were used to reach the plea agreement, including abuse of power and breach of trust. As a teacher, Muhumuza had authority and trust over the victim, who was naturally vulnerable like all students. A serious breach of that trust was said to have occurred when this professional relationship was abused.

“As a teacher, the accused was in a position of trust and authority over the victim. Pupils are inherently vulnerable to their teachers, and the abuse of this professional relationship constitutes a severe breach of trust,” the plea document reads in part.

The plea agreement recognised mitigating circumstances despite these significant aggravating factors, such as Muhumuza’s first-time offence status, remorse, guilty plea (which saved court time), and role as the only family provider whose career has now been negatively impacted.

Court documents claim that during a school trip on May 4 and 5, Muhumuza forced an 11-year-old boy to engage in inappropriate contact, including touching his genitalia and trying to perform additional sexual acts. According to the records, the child used WhatsApp to notify his mother, which led to a police report and eventual arrest.

When Muhumuza first appeared in court, he denied the accusations, despite police records showing a confession from the suspect. Later, a woman named Regina Nakintu, a retail store owner from Mirembe Road in Makindye Luwafu, who claimed that Muhumuza was her biological brother, helped him obtain bail. But this assertion was shown to be untrue.

On 10, 2025, Muhumuza was remanded on charges of attempted aggravated homosexuality, which were later amended to include an additional count of assault of a minor, in violation of Section 136 of the Penal Code Act.

Muhumuza consented to negotiate a plea deal, in which an accused individual acknowledges guilt for a crime in return for a lighter sentence and avoids a trial.
