MASAKA, Uganda | An office assistant at the Regional Director of Public Prosecution’s office in Masaka City has been arrested after being caught red-handed soliciting a bribe of UGX 3,550,000. The arrest followed a thorough investigation and a well-coordinated operation led by Detective Muhammad Twesigye, conducted on Wednesday in the presence of a senior state attorney.
The suspect’s arrest came after numerous complaints from members of the public who alleged that the office assistant was demanding money in exchange for providing services. According to Sam Agaba, Head of the Inspectorate’s Masaka regional office, the operation was executed after gathering sufficient evidence to set a trap for the suspect.
During the operation, the police recovered UGX 3,550,000, which is believed to have been solicited from a client. Interviews conducted by the police revealed that this sum was part of the bribe the suspect had allegedly demanded.
Agaba issued a strong warning to public servants, emphasizing that they are already compensated for their lawful duties and should not resort to extortion. He also encouraged members of the public to report instances of corruption to the authorities to promote accountability and enhance service delivery. The suspect is set to be arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court to face charges related to the solicitation of a bribe.
