Law Society Pushes for Supreme Court Ruling After Eron Kiiza’s Sentencing
Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde

KAMPALA, Uganda | The Uganda Law Society (ULS) has announced plans to meet with Chief Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo to demand the expeditious delivery of the Supreme Court’s judgment in the Attorney General vs Michael Kabaziguruka case, a ruling which bears direct relevance to the jurisdiction of military courts over civilians. This comes after Advocate Eron Kiiza, a member of the Society, was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment for contempt by the General Court Martial at Makindye.

In a statement signed by ULS President Isaac K. Ssemakadde, the Society has expressed its commitment to seeking justice for its member and emphasized the importance of engaging key stakeholders in resolving the matter. The planned meeting with the Chief Justice is intended to address concerns surrounding the jurisdiction of military courts and to advocate for fair judicial practices.

As part of its response, the ULS has planned to dispatch other delegations to Kitalya Government Prison to assess Advocate Kiiza’s conditions of incarceration and to the General Court Martial to engage with legal practitioners and analyze the procedural aspects of the case.

The ULS has invited its members to participate in these delegations, reflecting the collective resolve of the legal fraternity to safeguard the rule of law. The Communications Office at ULS has been tasked to coordinate this effort to ensure that interested members can contribute meaningfully to the initiatives.

Guided by its mandate under Section 3(c) of the Uganda Law Society Act, the statement issued by ULS reaffirms its dedication to protect and assist members of the legal profession in Uganda as regards conditions of practice. The Society has promised a comprehensive statement following the conclusion of these engagements, offering detailed insights into the case and its broader implications.
