Commissioner land registration remanded to Luzira prison on corruption charges

KAMPALA, UGANDA | The Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala has remanded the commissioner of land registration on charges of corruption and abuse of office.

Baker Mugaino was arrested by the Inspectorate of Government and appeared before Chief Magistrate Racheal Nakyanze.

Mugaino, between 8th and 20th April, 2025, being employed in public service as commissioner of land registration in the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, abused the authority of his office and did arbitrary acts prejudicial to the interests of his employer, the government of Uganda.

Mugaino is accused of cancelling a certificate of title that his office had issued to Tropical Bank Limited, Akugizibwe Gerald Mugerwa, and Namayiba Park Hotel in respect of land comprised in Kibuga Block 12 plots 658, 659, and 665 in Kisenyi; Kibuga Block 4 plot 152 in Namirembe and Kisungu; and Kyadondo Block 244 plot 2506.

Mugaino pleaded not guilty to charges of corruption and was remanded until today, the 5th of June, when court will hear his bail application.
