KAMPALA, Uganda | Justice Lawrence Tweyanze has officially assumed office as the new Resident Judge of Kasese High Court Circuit, replacing Justice David Makumbi.
Tweyanze, who was serving in Masaka, assumed office on Monday. In his inaugural remarks, he appreciated the groundwork laid by his predecessor and pledged to uphold the principles of fairness, accountability and service. He further emphasised a commitment to justice delivery and institutional integrity.
” We shall operate with zero tolerance for corruption. Justice will be our mission, and I look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to build on the successes already achieved.” Tweyanze said
The event was also attended by outgoing Judge David Makumbi, who reflected on his tenure as remarkable growth and performance and lauded the dedication of the court staff as a potential model for other courts in the country.
“I am deeply grateful for the support I received from my colleagues and staff. This circuit has grown tremendously and is now positioned to serve as a benchmark for judicial excellence in Uganda,” Makumbi stated.
The event was also witnessed by Her Worship Nkwasibwe Ivan, the deputy registrar of Kasese; grade one magistrates; resident state attorneys from ODPP Kasese; and judiciary staff in Kasese. The day climaxed with a symbolic tree planting by the outgoing Judge Makumbi as a symbol of growth and the continuity of the legacy.
Tweyanze, who presided over high-profile cases while in Masaka, including one of the late Kawempe North member of Parliament Muhammad Segirinya and his co-accused Allan Sewanyana, who were accused of murder, will now be in charge of the Kasese High Court Circuit.
During his tenure, Masaka High Court Circuit was selected by the Justice For Her Project, a United Nations women’s programme funded by the Austrian government, as one of the pilot courts for the project because of the high prevalence of GBV cases in the area. Other participating courts included Chief Magistrate Courts of Kalangala, Sembabule, and Rakai.
