Lawyers petition DPP over criminal cases against Eddie Mutwe and 17 other prisoners

KAMPALA, Uganda | Lawyers representing the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu’s personal civilian bodyguard, Edward Sebuufu, aka Eddy Mutwe, have petitioned the Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Frances ABodo over the charges imposed on their client and 17 other prisoners who were charged with the same case of aggravated robbery in Masaka Chief Magistrates Court.

Lawyers led by George Musisi said that all charges instituted on Eddy Mutwe and 17 other prisoners were instituted for the purpose of ensuring their long period of detention.

Other lawyers, including Geofrey Lukwago, Kyariisima Jeane, Brian Nuwamanya, Sheila Mutamba and Benjamin Katana, argue that one of the accused persons, Wakabi Grace (273\2025), was not even at the scene of the alleged incidents.

” Particulars of both charge sheets and the attendant police files indicate that the grave charge of aggravated robbery was maliciously instituted for purposes of ensuring their long period of detention but not necessarily on the weight of available evidence.” Musisi noted

Musisi further noted, ” We believe that all charges are politically motivated and the institution of the same is against the mandate of your good office envisaged under Article 120 of the Constitution and the different core values of this office.”

The lawyers also asked the Director of Public Prosecutions, Jane Frances Abodo, to intervene and call for these files from Masaka Chief Magistrates Court for better case management.

Eddie Mutwe was charged with two counts of robbery, aggravated robbery, and remanded to prison despite his poor health condition resulting from days of torture in military detention.

On Monday, May 5, 2025, Eddie Mutwe was brought to Masaka High Court by security forces. He was limping and supported by two individuals to walk.

On the 9th of May, 2025, the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court remanded 13 National Unity Platform supporters on charges of aggravated robbery committed on the 4th of May in Nyendo, Masaka, as police dispersed supporters of a football match organised by MP aspirant Lubowa Ssebina Gyaviira.

The prosecution states that Mutima Emma, Kiweewa Godfrey, Nuwamaya Godfrey, Tamale Patrick, Kakeeto Patrick, Yiga Peter , Ssengonzi Dennis, Kayondo Jacob, Mujuzi Lawrence, Kakiga Ezera, Musania Ivan, Ssebale Fred, Sseremba Reagan and others still at large assaulted Mulema Davis and stole his mobile phone valued at 100,000 shillings.
