Minister MAO pledges to mediate the strained relationship between the ULS president and the Attorney general.

KAMPALA, Uganda | The Justice and Constitutional Affairs Minister Nobert Mao has pledged to mediate the strained relationship between the Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde and the Judiciary’s Attorney General Kiryowa Kiwanuka who was expelled from the Society through executive order. 1 of 2024 on the 22nd October 2024.

”As a result of this order, the Attorney General @KiryowaKk is no longer recognized as the head of the Bar and has no authority or capacity to act on behalf of or represent the Ugandan Bar. However, he remains a member of the Uganda Law Society (ULS ID No. 0016)ULS Executive Order” executive order read.

Mao made the remarks while addressing the media at the Uganda Law Society weekly press briefing yesterday. He noted that he is not happy with Ssemakadde who he described as his President leading ULS from exile when he is not an ambassador

” Once you see me going on a plane these days, I will be going to meet the ULS president, Isaac Ssemakadde, who is leading us from abroad without being an ambassador, to deliver a message from the Attorney General and the Chief Justice regarding reconciliation. We must do what we preach on Alternative Dispute Resolution” Mao said

He added that he studied mediation and they were taught at times that the mediator has to come in only when the conflict is mature . And now believes the conflict is mature and equates it to a boil, saying when you touch it before it has matured, it can cause more problems.

Mao noted that the Uganda Law Society is a pioneer and perhaps what he would call a premier professional association in Uganda. So it will not reduce the ULS to the size of any single individual, and it further called upon everybody to rise up to the size of the Uganda Law Society; not to reduce the society to our size, disagreements will continue.

” I agree with those who say if Ugandan leaders would talk to each other, we would not have had the sad history we had. For instance, why wouldn’t the President of Uganda, who was then Kabaka Sir Edward Mutesesa, talk to Dr.Obote? Moa revealed

On Wednesday, March 19th, 2025, the Buganda Road Court ordered the Interpol Police to arrest Ssemakadde from whichever country he is in and bring him to trial on the charges of insulting the modesty of a woman, particularly the Director of Public Prosecutions, Jane Frances Abodo.
