KAMPALA, Uganda The Anti-Corruption Court has adjourned the trial of former minister for Karamoja Affairs Agnes Nandutu, who is facing charges of receiving iron sheets meant for the vulnerable people of Karamoja.
Acting Principal Judge Okuo Kajuga has set the 12th of June 2025 after delays in examining her health and medical reports, as the court had ordered in the last hearing.
Kajuga adjourned the hearing after Nandutu’s lawyer, Evans Ochieng, told the court to give them time for medical examinations to proceed but also informed the court that her client had lost her father, Nathan Kusolo, and therefore needed time to grieve and recover.
State Attorney David Bisamunyu told the court that a medical examination had not yet been carried out due to administrative delays and requested time to allow Mulago hospital to provide proper service.
Kajuga adjourned the hearing, acknowledging the need for a medical examination to proceed, which is expected to take place before the next hearing. Nandutu was not in present in court
Nandutu faces charges of dealing with suspect property, receiving 2000 pre-painted iron sheets between June and July 2022, which is contrary to Section 10(1) of the Anti-Corruption Act 2009.
On the 14th of April 2025, Lady Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga issued the order after Nandutu declined to begin defending herself, citing illness. Nandutu pleaded with the judge to meet her in private and show her the extent of her sickness.
“My medical condition is not a usual sickness like malaria or anything else, but it keeps attacking, and when the advice of her medical doctors is not adhered to, it can even kill.” She then pleaded with the judge, “I want to show you the extent of my sickness, my lord. I want to show you in private; as a fellow woman, I know you will understand. I can’t tell the condition in public because matters of sickness are private, and I can’t show you when men are here. But my health is not okay.” Nandutu said.
