Police investigate murder of bricklayer in Rukiga

KAMPALA, Uganda – Police have commenced investigations into the murder of a 30-year-old man in Rukiga District murdered following a bar fight.

Bright Hakiri, a resident of Rushayo Cell, Kiahaje Parish, in Bufundi Sub-county, Rubanda District, was reportedly involved in a violent altercation with a co-worker on Saturday evening, May 24, 2025, at a bar in Rwakimuri Cell, Nyakabungo Parish, Bukinda Sub-county, Rukiga District.

The Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson Elly Maate said preliminary investigations reveal that Hakiri and his colleague, Nkurunungi Fortune, had been drinking at a bar owned by one Ninsiima when an argument erupted over payment they had received for bricklaying work at the site of one Twebaze Evalisit.

The dispute escalated into a physical fight later that night when the two returned to their residence and reportedly assaulted each other using sticks. Their supervisor found Hakiri unconscious and called a doctor to attend to him at the scene, but he was pronounced dead shortly afterward.

According to Maate, two suspects, Nkurunungi Fortune and Twinamatsiko Brian, have been arrested in connection with the incident and are currently helping police with investigations.
