Police officer murdered by mob in Ibanda.

IBANADA, Uganda| The Uganda Police has confirmed the murder of an officer by a mob during a funeral in Kyambogo Cell, Bisheshe Cell, Ibanda district. Police Constable Chemonges Sulaiman was attacked by a mob during the burial of Kahangire Lazarus, which took place on the 6th of April, 2025.

According to police, Kahangire had been accused of attempted murder and died while on remand at Nyabuhikye government prison after he had been arrested by police after evading capture for his alleged crime. Chemonges was attacked by a mob at the funeral grounds and accused him of involvement in the deceased’s arrest and detention in prison.

Police further revealed that Chemonges fired warning shots to protect himself, but the mob overwhelmed him and killed him. Police further recovered an SMG rifle with 16 rounds of ammunition from the scene and transported Chemonges’ body to Ruhoko Health Centre mortuary for postmortem examination.

Police have since arrested 29 suspects connected to the murder and continued the search for more perpetrators. They also condemn the violent act and assure the public that all those involved in this criminal act will be held accountable.
