KAMPALA, Uganda | The President of Uganda Law Society Society Isaac Ssemakadde has written to the Registrar of the High Court Justice Paul W. Gagenya to nullify a court ruling on International Arrest Warrant issued by Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi.
Through counsel, Derrick Baze of GEM Advocates contends that the move is a politically motivated private prosecution, urging that Buganda Road Court was grossly out of order in issuing the warrant against their client and also set it aside for being illegal, null, and void.
Ssemakadde further asks the High Court to expedite the process of delivering its ruling because his reputation and standing are being damaged.
“This delay has placed our client in an untenable position, threatening his liberty and constitutional right to fair hearing under Article 28 of the constitution. As a senior Counsel and Uganda Law Society President, his reputation and standing are being irreparably damaged,” According to a letter written by his lawyers.
Ssemakadde’s laywers further informed court that the relentless arrest warrants and the lower court’s defiance represent a grave injustice, undermining not only our client’s rights but also the integrity of the judicial system, the legal profession and the rule of Law.
”We respectfully urge this Court to expedite the delivery of the ruling in Miscellaneous Application No.0030 of 2025 hopefully before the end of the instant month and to take immediate action to protect our client’s rights and prevent further injustice.
On 19th March 2025, Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi ordered the International Police Organization (Interpol) to arrest Uganda Law Society President Isaac Ssemakadde from which ever Country he is in and bring him to face trial on charges of insulting the modesty of a woman particularly the Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Frances Abodo.
Ssemakadde’s lawyers, led by Derrick Bazekuketta, told the chief magistrate that their client, Ssemakadde, was always present in court through them, a submission that the court rejected, saying it was not applicable in criminal cases where liability is held individually. The charges for which Ssemakadde has been issued an international arrest warrant were levied against him by lawyers Joshua Byamazima and Tony Tumukunde.
