KAMPALA, Uganda | Nixon Agasirwe, a former senior police officer, has been placed under remand until July 8, 2025, on charges of killing former Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Joan Kagezi.
Chief Magistrate Esther Nyadoi presided over the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court on Monday, where Agasirwe was charged with murder and arraigned.
Presenting the charge sheet to the magistrate, Chief State Attorneys Joseph Kyomuhendo and Richard Birivumbuka contended that on March 30, 2015, at Kiwatule, Nakawa Division, in Kampala District, Agasirwe, along with other people who are still at large, allegedly purposefully killed Joan Kagezi.
Magistrate Nyadoi informed Agasirwe that because the charges against him were capital in nature and could only be tried in the High Court, he was not allowed to enter a plea. As a result, Agasirwe decided against pleading guilty to the murder charge.
Agasirwe’s arrest came after Daniel Kisekka Kiwanuka, a convicted murderer of Kagezi, testified before a panel of four judges at the High Court’s International Crimes Division that Agasirwe provided them with the funds to carry out the murder. This testimony led to Agasirwe’s arrest. Kisekka testified in court on May 21, 2025, and Agasirwe was arrested soon after.
Nasur Abudallah Mugonole, John Kibuuka, and John Masajjagge are the three suspects who are still under investigation. The charges against them include terrorism and the March 30, 2015, murder of Joan Kagezi. Four people are now suspected of being involved in Kagezi’s murder after Agasirwe was apprehended and remanded. Daniel Kisekka was the fifth individual convicted on the basis of his confession.
According to Kisekka, who acknowledged taking part in the crime, the group got UGX 500,000 from Agasirwe in exchange for killing Kagezi. Kisekka received a sentence of 35 years in prison for his cooperation and for not wasting the court’s time.
