KAMPALA,Uganda| The Uganda Law Society has expressed concern about the inexplicable delays affecting numerous ongoing legal proceedings involving the organisation, and it’s President Isaac Ssemakadde that these delays create the impression of animosity between the judiciary and the organisation.
In a press statement, the Vice President of the Uganda Law Society, Anthony Assimwe, condemns the current impasse; the courts refuse to schedule hearing dates for cases filed by Mr. Ssemakadde , who faces multiple arrest warrants, including an international one from Buganda Road Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi.
Asimwe further condemns Ssemakade’s proposed two-year prison sentence for contempt of court by Justice Musa Ssekana in February 2025, allegedly for derogatory social media remarks.
Asimwe also strongly condemns: “Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo banned President Ssemakadde’s speech at the 2025 New Law Year opening, demanding an apology for alleged insults, escalating tensions.”
” The ULS previously called for a cordial engagement with the judiciary top management (January 16 letter), and Hon. Nobert Mao, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs , offered to facilitate. Our response remains to resolve the relevant cases promptly.” Asiimwe revealed.
He further castigated that a mediation summit of the bar bench should not obstruct the timely disposal of cases concerning the President’s personal liberty, the democratic mandate of the legal profession, and the services owed by ULS to the government, the judicial service commission, the courts, and the general public.
Among the several cases pending are High Court Criminal Division Application No. 0030 of 2025, an application filed by President Ssemakadde for a stay or suspension of the private prosecution case at Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court. This matter remains adjourned sine die, with the ruling to be delivered on notice.
High Court Civi Division Application No. 137 of 2025: an application for a stay of execution or suspension of the private judge Ssekana’s conviction and two-year sentence against President Ssemakadde. This application has not been assigned a judge or hearing date.
A trial of appeals at the court of appeal; Civil appeals No. 98, 99, and 102, arising from Judge Ssekana’s decision to cancel our extraordinary meeting.
High Court Civil Division cause N0.33 of 2025. A habeas corpus application concerning the military detention of ULS member, Adv. Eron Kiiza.
Asiimwe held that as the governing body of the legal practitioners in Uganda, we emphasize prompt resolution the judicial system, and uphold the principle of justice
