The Uganda Law Society Eastern Bar will conduct prisoner engagement, legal advocacy and justice reform on the 26th of April, 2025, with Uganda Prisons Service Maluku Government prisons as a means to foster justice administration.
This was revealed by Eddie Naguru, the Head of Uganda Law Society Eastern Bar; the event will be spearheaded under the theme ” Prisoner Rights, Legal Advocacy and Justice Reform”.
” Maluku Government Prisons currently host over 1,500 inmates; over 900 of those are capital offenders awaiting trial. That wait for many inmates dates back to nearly a decade, and the queue is long. As a result, the delay degenerates to disgruntlement, then apathy, disillusionment, despair, devastation and finally an involuntary plea bargain concession,” Naguru said in a press statement.
He further added that the engagement is to help prisoners understand their rights, the justice process and how to navigate the system; educate and support the prisoners currently undergoing trial; engage prison authorities on prison policy, including those related to disciplinary action, transfers and release processes.
Naguru added that the ULS eastern bar that day will support the establishment of a ULS Eastern Bar shop, which is informed by the current lack of a modesty facility to ensure hygiene and also mitigate the spread of skin disease among prisoners.
” Beyond the foregoing, the engagement is to create robust fora for engagement and to strip any veils between the Bar and the prisoners in need of justice. The engagement shall be climaxed with several co-curricular activities, including a football match between the advocates against prisoners and the senior advocates against the warders. Naguru stated
